Car keys
Modern car keys have a chip (transponder) the car's computer has to recognise, or the engine won't start. A spare key is cut and programmed to the car, and a broken remote can often be repaired or moved into a new shell. If you've lost all the keys, programming is harder and needs proof that the car is yours, usually the registration certificate and your ID. For some makes, the key can only be made at the dealer.
