Auxiliary belt replacement

The auxiliary belt (the serpentine or poly-V belt) drives the alternator, the air-conditioning compressor and, on many cars, the power-steering pump or the water pump. Signs of wear are a squeal at start-up or when the air conditioning comes on, cracks and frayed edges. The pulleys and the tensioner are checked with it. It isn't the timing belt, which keeps the engine in time and has its own interval.

Typical duration
1 h
How often
At the interval in the service book, or when it is cracked or noisy. Many drivers replace it with the timing belt.
